Kaohsiung is considered the capital of southern Taiwan and is an important cultural and tourist center. Its southern location means that the city enjoys a warmer climate throughout the year. Kaohsiung has an important commercial and passenger port that has become a mandatory stop for cruise ships traveling through East Asia.
On this day trip we will head to the outskirts of the city to visit the impressive Fo Guang Shan Monastery, which houses a giant Buddha over 100 meters high and offers spectacular views. Later we will return to the city, where we will visit the iconic Lotus Lake, famous for its twin pagodas and the huge statues of the tiger and the dragon that protect it.
Next, we will visit the artistic district of the city, in the surroundings of the docks, and we will walk along the river of love. From there, we will go to the symbolic martyrs’ shrine and the old British Consular Residence, on top of Mount Gushan, which offers beautiful views of the city.
Once a thriving tea and fabric trading port, the area is now home to local designer stores, hipster cafés, and a fabric market.
Visit very modern Taipei 101 skyscraper, and also get a peek at the past through a collection of old buildings still remaining, known as 44 South Village, Taipei’s very first military dependents village.
