Tattoos, graffiti, pop music, trendy fashions, imported goods, movies – today’s Ximending is a veritable temple of youth subcultures. However, in the late Qing Dynasty, this area, directly outside the old walled city, was a cultural wasteland. Sometimes called “the Harajuku of Taipei”, this colorful contemporary chaos was heavily influenced by Japan’s 50-year occupation of Taiwan in the early 20th century.
With your host, explore the history and landmarks of this area, from the Red House Theater to the Tattoos alley passing through the Tianhou Temple, graffiti and movies streets, and experience the many layers of modern Taipei life.
